Medication is often considered to be an easier alternative to one’s problems that is not always the case. Some conditions respond very effectively to medication while others do not. Some respond better to counseling without medication, and some respond best to both medication and counseling.  Research has shown that when medication is combined with the proper counseling, people do better.
When considering medication it is important to know the potential risks and side effects of the medication. Equally important is how long you are expected to take it, and how to stop taking the drug should you decide to do so.
In the state of Maryland only a doctor with a medical degree can prescribe medication. Your selection of the medical doctor to prescribe medication for emotional conditions is important. Whatever drug is prescribed it is designed to affect the chemical balance of your brain. Records indicate that a large percentage of psychiatric medication is prescribed by primary care physicians. Many people choose receiving medication from their primary care doctor rather than a psychiatrist for a variety of reasons, such as convenience, cost, and attitude. Some people believe that seeking the services of a psychiatrist implies that one has a severe mental illness, which of course is not true.
If you choose to have your primary care physician prescribe medication, you might want to consult with a psychiatrist in order to obtain a second opinion; additionally the psychiatrist can possibly make suggestions to your primary care physician regarding your medications. Most primary care physicians are pleased to receive this information. Your counselor can assist you with names of psychiatrists in your area.
